A breeze pulls at ever so light linen, and for a few seconds, she closes her eyes, long lashes shielding from stray grains of golden sand. Even out here, by the intersection between Routes 111 and 112, the sun’s heat is scorching, and temperatures will be much higher once farther north – deeper into the desert.

Lia had told him she would meet him here, though: near Mauville, on Route 111, at the entrance to the desert.

Why does she feel so nervous while waiting? She had come prepared. She had done this countless times before. Is it because of him? Because while telling him about this upcoming trip to the ruins over text messages, it had occurred to her that maybe it would be fun to ask him if he’d like to come along? Lia had not expected Marshall to agree, but admittedly, more than nervous, she finds herself to be excited about this.

”At least you won’t have to fly over the desert today, Otto.” She smiles at the Pidgeot that had brought her to this intersection, a delicate hand brushing feathers as golden as her gaze. ”He should be here soon. I’ll call you if I need your help, yeah?”

A beak lightly presses against her arm, and it’s in a beam of light that the huge avian pokémon disappears back into an Ultra Ball’s confines.

Though a light breeze teased Lia's clothes and hair, the wind whipped with howling fury as Marshall raced down Route 111. It raked at his clothes, its claws blunt against the thick material of his jacket and the dome of his helmet. The engine of his bike roared back in defiance.[break][break]

When Lia had invited him to go explore some desert ruins together, Marshall had nearly leaped out of bed with excitement. First, it was an adventure! He hadn't gone on one in a while. And second, it was time to spend with Lia. And third, she wanted to spend that time with him. Maybe she'd recognized the meaning behind the flowers he'd purchased and had mailed to her workplace.[break][break]

Before long, he spotted Lia's familiar figure at the entrance to the desert. Pulling on the front brake, he slowed his approach to a safe speed before finally stopping in front of her.[break][break]

Marshall removed his helmet, freeing his long red hair from its confines, and grinned at her. "Hey! Long time no see." It had only been a couple of weeks since Splashfest. "Ready to go?"[break][break]

His motorcycle had an extra long seat to accommodate a second rider, as well as wheels and a suspension to handle rough terrain with ease. With him, he had brought a spare helmet and a backpack of supplies: plenty of water, trail mix and granola bars for snacks, and a first aid kit.

It’s like being in a movie. Or, well, that’s what he makes her think of when approaching on his motorcycle and taking off his helmet as if he were in some kind of ad, his red hair tousled yet somehow still looking perfect.How can anyone be so good-looking?

”Hi! It has, hasn’t it?” She laughs lightly, barely even a giggle. She knows it hasn’t really been a long time, merely a couple of weeks, but it sure has felt like a small eternity. It’s silly. They barely know each other, so why is that over these past few days Lia has found herself constantly thinking about him and about wanting to spend more time with him? Having a crush can be a terrible thing. On the bright side, it had led to this.

”I am, yeah. You know where we’re headed, right?”

She had sent him directions to the ruin earlier, but it’s better to be sure. It’s not all that far from where they are, anyway. She wouldn't take Marshall to one of the more dangerous ruins, especially with what happened to the Regirock one last year.

Lia's smile and slight laugh made Marshall's heart pound with the joy of her sheer presence. He wanted to tell her she looked pretty in her outfit, that he hadn't been able to stop thinking about her since their least meeting, that he hoped she liked the flowers he'd sent her. All these thoughts and more felt ready to burst out of him, and he simply couldn't choose.[break][break]

In the end, Marshall decided to focus on her words and the reason they were meeting in the first place. "Yeah, I think so! I looked it up on the Internet this morning just to be sure but nudge me if I'm going the wrong way."[break][break]

He handed Lia her helmet and showed her how to put it on securely.[break][break]

"All right, hop onto the back and hold on tight. Waist is best, since we'll be going fast." Under his own helmet, he blushed at the thought of Lia holding onto him, even though it was exactly what he wanted. He'd been the one to offer to drive them to the ruins on his motorcycle in the first place.[break][break]

Once she was ready, they were off! Marshall made sure to drive at a slower speed than normal, which was admittedly still fast — they zoomed across the sand dunes, raising a cloud of dust in their wake. But he didn't want Lia's first experience on a motorcycle to be too frightening. If she wanted to go faster on the ride back, he'd happily oblige.[break][break]

Eventually, they reached their destination. Marshall killed the engine and took off his helmet again. "This looks like the place. How was the ride?" he asked, looking over his shoulder at Lia.

Her hand brushes against his when she takes the helmet, the feeling of leather being all too familiar. It’s distancing, in a way, but it elicits a blush all the same – one that only deepens when she sits behind him and wraps her arms around his waist. So close. The last time he had been this close to her was when he jumped in the water to save her.

The hum of the engine steals away the thought, and as they venture into the desert, she can’t help but smile; her head gently resting against Marshall’s back while watching the dunes pass by. It’s fun, exciting, and Lia knows well that it’s not just the speed that makes her heart race, but she tries to ignore this and just enjoy the ride until the ruins are in sight.

Little remains of what had once been, stone still standing as if by miracle despite the persistent desert winds. Some would care little for a place like this. To her, it’s amazing.

”Yep, that’s it.” When she takes off the helmet, fingers brush through silver hair in an attempt to make it less messy, only pausing when catching the look he gives her. Lia smiles then, with the kind of bright smile that is full of excitement and wonder.

”Come on. I just need to take a few picture, but there might be wild pokémon around, so we should be careful.”

"What kind of wild Pokémon?" Marshall asked as he followed Lia into the ruins. Even as he voiced this question, however, he selected a Poké Ball from his belt and released his Kommo-o in a flash of light. It never hurt to be careful.[break][break]

The old stone of the ruins loomed around them like silent guardians standing vigil over a secret past. Marshall looked around curiously, unsure what Lia found so enthralling about the place, but nevertheless finding himself entertained by the simple novelty of it all. While she took pictures, he walked slowly around a particularly massive column with weather-worn inscriptions etched into the stone.[break][break]

As he peered closer, a scraping noise behind him caused his Kommo-o to snarl. Marshall glanced over his shoulder but saw nothing. "What's up, Redline? What's over there?"

Marshall’s Kommo-o makes for an impressive sight, and inevitably, the contrast between it and the dainty little Comfey she releases awakens a chuckle that lightly echoes through ancient stone. Lei, one of Lia’s most trusted pokémon, gives her companions no more than a quick look before flying to rest on top of his trainer’s head – the string of white and yellow blooms he carries being as if a flower crown.

Lia doesn’t seem to mind this, as if she were used to the behaviour of his Comfey.
[break][break]
She is.
[break][break]
The second pokémon she releases is a Smeargle, which gets to work with sketching their surroundings while Lia herself takes pictures.

”Depends! Desert’s notoriously full of ground and rock types. In a ruin like this, we might even find a few fossils.” She explains in response to Marshall’s questions, walking among pillars. ”Oh, you might wanna watch where you go too. You know… Wouldn’t wanna activate any traps.”

With that, she pauses, turning to look at him, and at that very moment, there is a smirk. Is she messing with him? Absolutely.

Shame something seems to interrupt them by catching the attention of Marshall’s Kommo-o.

”Maybe we should go have a look?”

"I'll be careful!" Marshall called over his shoulder. "I promise!"[break][break]

Drawn by the strange sounds, he and his Kommo-o, Redline, rounded the corner in the ruins and stumbled upon an unexpected sight: a deep pit in the middle of the ground, a drop of approximately twenty feet. The walls of the pit were too steep and uniform for it to be a random sinkhole; Marshall guessed it was one of those traps Lia had just mentioned.[break][break]

At the bottom of the hole was a young Cranidos. It scratched at the wall with its arms and made distressed whimpers, but otherwise didn't move. Marshall leaned closer and realized one of its legs was twisted at an odd angle.[break][break]

Concern for the Pokémon filled him immediately. "Lia! Hey, Lia! Give me a hand!" he shouted, even as he looked around for something that they might use to aid the injured Cranidos. If only they had rope, or a Pokémon with VINE WHIP.

When she had mentioned traps, it had been a joke – she hadn’t expected any of them to still be active at this kind of ruin. Perhaps she had tempted fate with her words. Or, seeing things from an optimist’s point of view: perhaps she should be glad she had made Marshall overly aware of the traps, and that they had come to the desert on this specific day instead of any other.

”Marshall?!” Lia still worries when he calls out to her, though. She looks at her Smeargle, quickly telling the pokémon to stay where it is and continue its work while she goes to investigate.
[break][break]
The sight of the trapped Cranidos fills her with concern.
[break][break]
”Gods… I doubt it can walk right now. We could try catching it to take it to the pokémon center, maybe? I wouldn’t wanna put it in any unneeded stress, though… Do you think you could pick it up?” Kneeling by the side of the trap, Lia looks up at Marshall, and it’s then that she releases a second Comfey from an Ultra Ball – this one carries only red flowers.

”Fey, do you think you could make a rope with vines?”
[break][break]
Sure enough, this Comfey does know VINE WHIP, and it soon attaches its vines to a nearby pillar.

Marshall nodded at Lia's suggestion. "The Pokémon Center is a good idea. We should get it back to Mauville right away, since that's closest. I'll go down and get it, if Comfey can act as my harness and lower me down there."[break][break]

Once the vines were secured around the pillar and around Marshall himself, he let Comfey lower him slowly to the bottom of the pit. The Cranidos cowered at the strange human's approach, but it was unable to back away due to its broken leg.[break][break]

"Hey buddy, I'm not gonna hurt you," Marshall murmurs gently to the wild Pokémon. Carefully, so as not to aggravate the broken leg, he picked up the Cranidos and cradled him in his arms. Once he was sure they were both secure, he tugged slightly on one of Comfey's vines. "You can lift us up now!"[break][break]

Waiting on the surface with Lia and her Pokémon, Redline suddenly swiveled, alerted by another strange noise. The ground trembled, and a faint rumbling became louder. The Kommo-o snarled and took a defensive stance to protect Lia and the Comfeys.[break][break]

Suddenly, sand sprayed into the air just at the edge of the ruins as a massive Hippowdon emerged from the earth, roaring. It sighted the group at the pit trap and started to charge!

When Lia had worried herself sick about how this trip of theirs would go, imagining every possible scenario she could think of, this hadn’t crossed her mind at all. Unexpected situations are not rare when exploring ruins, nor is encountering wild pokémon that get a little too aggressive because they believe their territory to have been invaded, but having to rescue one? This is more what she’d expect to find during a ranger patrol.

If she weren’t so concerned over the Cranidos’ wellbeing, she’d be amused at how both her professions often get tangled.
[break][break]
”Ah…Marshall, be careful, I wouldn’t want it to attack you…”
[break][break]
Thankfully, it seems like the injured pokémon accepts Marshall’s help given that it has no way to escape, and when her Comfey pulls them both out of the pit, she can’t help but smile at them.

”Hey, you’re doing great. We’ll get you some help in just a moment, okay?” Lia tells the Cranidos in a calm and sweet tone. One that comes in heavy contrast with the raging roar of a Hippowdown.

Shit.
[break][break]
”Marshall, keep the Cranidos safe.” She stands, her smile now vanished. The Comfey fly to her side, and Lia is quick to give swift commands. ”Lei, TERRAIN. Fey, PETAL DANCE.”
[break][break]
When dealing with a pokémon like a Hippowdown, water is what most people would resort to, but Lia is no water type trainer, and instead she relies on what she knows well.

The Comfey work in perfect sync, their flowers twirling in the air. Lei’s GRASSY TERRAIN causes shoots of grass to emerge from cracks in the ground, and it serves to empower the PETAL DANCE with which Fey attacks the Hippowdon. For how small they are, the Comfey are clearly strong and battle-trained.

Lia's Comfeys made quick work of the wild Hippowdon, especially when Marshall's Kommo-o joined the fight with a hard-hitting DRAGON CLAW. Eventually, after exchanging a few blows, the Hippowdon rumbled in irritation and turned away, stomping off to find another meal.[break][break]

"Damn, Lia, your Pokémon are strong," Marshall said, wide-eyed with amazement. The Cranidos was still in his arms, its broken leg cradled carefully against his chest. "You're so cool."[break][break]

Of course, to Marshall, Lia could do literally anything and be the coolest, prettiest, and smartest woman on the planet. Those awe-filled thoughts were cut short, however, by the agitated cry of the injured Pokémon he carried. It squirmed in his arms, trying to break free.[break][break]

"Hey, hey! We gotta get you patched up somewhere. Easy!" the redhead exclaimed, trying to calm the Cranidos while simultaneously attempting to keep him from falling out of his arms.[break][break]

"Are you gonna be much longer with the photos and sketching, Lia? We should head back."
